Cassie had barely slept a wink the past couple nights and when she had managed to drift off she had been confronted with awful images of Taylor in a morning suit, proudly waiting for Michelle to saunter up the aisle, her prominent bump leading the way. Taylor had left a multitude of messages on her answering machine, begging for her to call him but she just couldn’t face talking to him right now. It would just be too awkward…and heartbreaking. Eventually, she had sent Tay a text saying that she thought it was best if they didn’t see each other for a while. She had said that Michelle and the baby we’re his priority now and she didn’t want to interfere with that. Cassie had never come down from a high so fast as she had that night. Everything had been perfect, it was finally happening between them and then bam, straight out of the blue, Michelle comes along and drops her bombshell.

It was such a miserable situation and she couldn’t even really talk to anyone about it. Her best friends were miles away and this wasn’t the sort of thing you sent in an email. The girls at work were nice enough, but she didn’t want to burden them with something so personal. Plus, this wasn’t really her issue, it was Taylor’s and she couldn’t go around broadcasting his business to other people. The only person she could really talk to about it was him, and that obviously wasn’t an option.

God, if she knew her life was going to turn out this miserable she would have just married Ryan and been done with it. Perhaps she had been deluding herself, hoping that eventually she and Taylor would end up together. She had held onto this girlish fantasy for years, it was part of what made her refuse Ryan for so long. But then she had seen Taylor, all happy with his ‘then’ girlfriend, (the one before Michelle), and had thought: ‘Sod it! I’m entitled to some romance, some happiness, too!’ Well, just look how that had turned out. And now she was alone, albeit by choice, but still alone. And as she had feared, someone else had filled that spot in Taylor’s life. Now, she supposed, it was time for her to let go; to move on and grow up, once and for all.

~ ~ ~

Taylor sat in the usual queue of Monday morning traffic and thought how relieved he was to be getting out of the flat. The past few days had been an absolute nightmare. Michelle had insisted upon staying with him, saying she couldn’t face going home and having to confront her parents. Despite Ike and Zac’s absence, the apartment had felt oppressively cramped, not from lack of space, but because Michelle always appeared to be in his face. He couldn’t escape her; everywhere he went she was a step behind. She kept droning on about how nauseous and weak she felt, asking him to draw her baths, fetch her drinks and lift heavy things for her – he absolutely drew the line at her request for a massage. He wouldn’t mind so much except the fact that he couldn’t stand the woman and with each passing minute, grew to hate and resent her even more. Every little thing she did annoyed the hell out of him; the way she’d sit too close to him on the sofa, leaning her head on his shoulder and stroked her non-existent bump or the way she chatter on about their future together. Eventually he had cracked and had just told her straight out that he had no intention of getting back together. He said he’d take care of the child and support her in any way he could but that was it. She instantly looked devastated and then burst into tears, locking herself away in the bathroom. And as awful as it was, he actually felt relief as it gave him a few minutes peace. He couldn’t go on like this for the next seven and a half months. He’d end up killing himself…or her.

He had almost reached breaking point. Suffering yet another sleepless night, and had called both of his vacationing brothers, confessing everything over the phone. They had sounded as shocked as he had when he first found out. Both were sympathetic and tried to offer advice; although, Zac didn’t hold back where his thoughts about Michelle were concerned.

Tay, I don’t know what it is, but something about this seems a bit suspicious.” He had said.

“How so?”

“It’s just that Michelle is the most non-maternal woman I have ever met in my life and now it sounds like she’s ready to pop out a litter under the kitchen table; people just don’t down shift that fast.”

“Hm” Taylor sighed, his brother had a point.

“I mean, have you seen one of these positive pregnancy tests?” Zac asked.

“No, but I’ve made an appointment with her doctor this Friday.” He replied.

“Why wait til then? Buy a test, Tay and make her take it so you can see for yourself.”

Taylor thought over his dismal weekend and how, in a split second, his life had been turned upside down.

“You’re right, man. I think I will.”

“Good…By the way, I…uh, I got a call from Cassie.” Zac confessed.

Taylor felt his heart leap in hope. “You did?”

“Yeah, she said she was really sorry, but she can’t make my party on Saturday. Apparently she’s dropped my gift off at Mom’s.”

“Oh.” Taylor felt it plummet again.

“I’m sorry, Tay.” Zac offered.

“Yeah Zac.” He sighed. “Me too.”

Michelle paced up and down Taylor’s poky apartment before flopping, dejectedly on the sofa. Fuck, why wasn’t this working? She had tried every girlish trick she knew to try and seduce Taylor into taking her back. She had fawned all over him, behaved like a real damsel in distress, suppressing her ball breaking tendencies to try and make him feel more like a man. But she was getting zip in return, absolute bupkiss. In fact, she feared that he was growing even more distant. And to make things worse, he had got on the phone and had made a doctor’s appointment himself. Thankfully, they couldn’t fit her in until Friday, so that was something, at least.  Oh, this was a disaster! Michelle was so used to getting any man she wanted that Taylor’s snub actually made her question if she had lost her touch.

‘No, of course not!’ She reassured herself, ‘don’t be silly. As if that would ever happen.’   She would just have to pull out all the stops and really turn on the charm. Yes, that’s what she would do. Tonight, she would ply him with food and drink, make him feel all nice and then by morning he would realize that being with her was the best thing for him. She clapped her hands together gleefully, and jumped up from the couch. Right, first to the market and then she needed to go and buy some sexy new underwear.

Taylor let himself into the apartment and was greeted by something that smelled absolutely delicious. Heading cautiously down the hall to the kitchen, he found Michelle taking what appeared to be lamb shanks out of the oven. She looked up from what she was doing as he hovered, tentatively, in the doorway.

“Hey.” She smiled.

“Hi.” He replied, warily.

“Dinner’ll be ready in about two minutes. Hope you’re hungry.” She said, also bringing out sauté potatoes and roasted parsnips.

Well, in actual fact, he was starving, but she didn’t need to know that.

“Actually, I was just gonna grab a sandwich and head to bed.” He said, heading towards the fridge.

“A sandwich won’t do.” She said getting two plates out of the cabinet. “You don’t have to stay up late or anything, just have some dinner and then hit the sack.”

“Look Michelle, I - ” he began but she cut him off.

“Listen Taylor, don’t read anything into this, ok? This is just to say thank you for putting up with me these past few days. I know it hasn’t been easy for you and I just wanted to do something nice.”

He hesitated for a moment, eyeing her suspiciously and then eventually gave in. Hell, it was just dinner. He may as well get something out of this.

~ ~ ~

An hour later and Michelle sat listening attentively as Taylor told her about his day and the stresses he was having with his new campaign. They had begun the meal awkwardly at first and it had taken him a while to loosen up, but the combination of rich food, good wine and Michelle’s ability to look interested meant that he soon began to relax in her company.

Tay, I don’t know how you do it,” she said, topping up his wine glass. “You’re so dedicated. You really believe in what you do, I admire that.”

He smiled faintly at her flattery and gave a modest shrug.

“I’m just doing what a lot of other people try to do. I know it’s just a drop in the ocean, but I really want to make a difference to these kids.” He said.

Michelle managed to suppress a yawn. She took a sip of her mineral water wishing she could knock back the wine but it would kind of ruin the whole act. Plus, she needed to stay in control to guide things along.

“You’re amazing.” She said, picking up one of the chocolate covered strawberries she had bought for dessert. “I wish I could do something like that, make a difference.” She lied. She had no desire whatsoever to help a bunch of no-hopers. Tough, they should all just go out get jobs, stop putting a strain on the economy.

“You can.” He replied simply.

She shook her head, in affected diffidence.

“Michelle, of course you can,” Taylor encouraged.

“No,” she sighed. “People don’t open up to me the way they do with you. You just have a way with people, especially kids.” She added, for effect.

“People would open up to you too, if you just let your guard down once in a while. You have your moments.” He said, taking a large sip of wine.

“Only with you,” she smooth talked. “You bring out the good in me.”

He laughed in response to that, shaking his head.

“You do!” she insisted. “You make me feel like I’m a good person, that I can do good things. My family sure don’t make me feel that way.” She exaggerated. “I think they think that I’m a big screw up.” She sighed, mournfully. “I dunno, maybe I am.” She added, hoping for the sympathy vote.

“You’re not a screw up.” Taylor informed her. “You’re not.” He responded to her dejected sigh. “You’re a bright woman with a lot going for you; you just need to believe in yourself.”

Oh she believed in herself alright. She looked up at him, doing her best Bambi impression and then smiled. She held his gaze a little longer than necessary, coyly dipping her chin like Princess Di whilst slowly edging closer to him.

He drained his glass, put it back on the table and then yawned, closing his eyes, letting his head loll backwards.

“Poor guy, you must be exhausted.” She cooed, lightly stroking his hair.

“Hm.” He replied.

She let her fingers trail through his locks and then gently grazed his cheek before moving on to massage the nape of his neck in a way she knew he loved. He had consumed almost a whole bottle of red wine by himself, plus a glass of brandy and it was obviously beginning to take effect. His breathing became deeper and more measured as he completely relaxed and began to drift off to sleep. Michelle chose this opportunity to lean in, kissing him gently on the mouth.

“Mm…Cass.” He sighed against her lips.

She sat back in shock and disgust, staring at him in disbelief. After all she had done tonight, how could he have that trollop on his mind? Especially seeing as she was supposed to be carrying his child! Taking a deep breath, she tried to compose herself. She leaned in again and decided there was definitely a way to take his mind off that cow. Kissing him again, her mouth became a little more insistent. She reached up and began unbuttoning his collar, her talons grazing over his chest.

Out of the blue Taylor’s eyes flew open. He was suddenly extremely sober and wide awake and was staring at her, his expression a cross between confusion and fury.

it made me laugh when he called her by Cassie's name. As if she could seduce Taylor into loving her again! (we all know that never works! hehe)
